Our Church has selected "Towards Christian Maturity" as the main Church Theme for 2008. We wish to encourage every worshipper in our midst to grow stronger and healthier in our faith, and aim to grow into the full stature of Christ – as perfect as Him.
The Regenerated Christian
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (I Cor 2:14)
Jesus answered and said unto him, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3)
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. (I Peter 1:23)
In order for a Christian to grow, he must first make sure that he is regenerated. In simple terms, it means born again by the Spirit (given a new and a transformed life). Without such a new life, there is no possibility of growth. It is just like without a seedling, there is no life, least to say growth or fruit bearing.
So, the question is: "Are you born again?" "Have you been given a new life by Christ?"
The Growing Christian
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. (II Peter 1:8-11)
The Apostle Peter tells us that in order to prove our calling and election, we must be diligent in our Christian growth and fruit-bearing. If a Christian does not grow spiritually, he is being considered as blind, cannot see afar off and had forgotten that he was purged from his old sins (redeemed). Therefore, it is expected that every regenerated Christian must grow spiritually and towards maturity.
The Mature Christian
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: (Eph 4:13)
The ultimate measurement of maturity is against the standard of Christ - our model. Perhaps many will say that is no possible, for no one could be perfect like Christ. I agree. But nevertheless, it has pointed to us or given to us a standard. It also reminds us that growing towards spiritual maturity is a life long lesson.
Dearly beloved, let us resole to grow to be like Christ and into His stature of perfection.
